PRESS RELEASE Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru C. Joseph Vijay Inaugurates the World’s First Pinhole Pupilloplasty Centre at Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, TTK road, Alwarpet, Chennai ➢ The advanced procedure was developed by Prof. Dr. Amar Agarwal, which has provided vision to over 5000 patients so far ➢ New centre launched during the 41st National Eye Donation Fortnight, to advance tissue-preserving treatment for selected patients with corneal scars, irregular corneas and complex optical aberrations Chennai, August 27, 2026: The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru C. Joseph Vijay, today inaugurated the World’s First Pinhole Pupilloplasty Centre at Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, TTK Road, Alwarpet, Chennai, in the presence of Dr Amar Agarwal, Dr Manoj Khatri and many other important dignitaries, marking an important step in advancing access to innovative, tissue-preserving solutions for selected patients affected by complex corneal conditions. The initiative also complements the ongoing 41st National Eye Donation Fortnight, reinforcing the importance of exploring innovative approaches to restoring vision while preserving precious donor tissue. The dedicated centre will focus on Pinhole Pupilloplasty (PPP), a microsurgical technique, developed by Dr Amar Agarwal, designed to improve the quality of vision in appropriately selected patients with conditions such as corneal scars, irregular corneas, high corneal aberrations and certain post-surgical optical distortions. The inauguration places renewed focus on an important challenge in ophthalmology, restoring useful vision to patients with complex corneal optics while preserving the natural cornea whenever clinically possible. Instead of replacing the cornea, PPP modifies the eye's optical system by creating a small, precisely centred pupillary aperture. The smaller aperture helps block scattered and distorted light rays and allows better-focused rays to reach the retina. This pinhole effect can reduce the impact of higher-order optical aberrations and thereby improve functional vision and visual quality. Importantly, the procedure does not require donor corneal tissue, making it particularly relevant in the context of the global shortage of donor corneas. A landmark international survey on corneal transplantation and eye banking estimated that approximately 12.7 million people worldwide were awaiting corneal transplantation, while only one donor cornea was available for every 70 people in need. The survey further reported that approximately 185,000 corneal transplants were performed annually across 116 countries, highlighting the significant gap between global demand and donor tissue availability. Prof. Dr. Amar Agarwal, Chairman, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, said: "We are immensely thankful to the Honourable Chief Minister, Thiru. C. Joseph Vijay, for inaugurating the PPP Centre. The inauguration of a dedicated Pinhole Pupilloplasty Centre is an important milestone because it will enhance the access and wide adaptation of this path-breaking surgical innovation, thus providing vision to many” He further added, "The PPP Centre enables us to create a highly structured pathway, from detailed corneal diagnostics and optical assessment to surgery and long-term outcome monitoring. It will also become a platform for teaching ophthalmologists how to identify the right patient for the right procedure." Dr. Manoj Khatri, Director, Vitreo-Retinal Services, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, said, "Innovation becomes truly meaningful when it moves from a scientific idea to a solution that changes a patient's everyday life. We firmly believe that the Honourable Chief Minister’s presence here at the inauguration will further this cause, and take a remarkable innovation to benefit millions of patients worldwide” The hospital has also been working to expand knowledge of the technique among ophthalmologists, with more than 50 ophthalmologists undergoing training through workshops and academic programmes every year. The Pinhole Pupilloplasty Centre at Alwarpet will serve not merely as a surgical facility but as a comprehensive programme encompassing advanced diagnostics, patient selection, surgery, postoperative assessment, long-term follow-up, research and ophthalmic training. The inauguration also builds on Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital's recent community eye-health initiatives in Tamil Nadu. Earlier, to mark the birthday of Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru C. Joseph Vijay, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital conducted a large-scale, one-day eye-screening initiative for schoolchildren across Tamil Nadu. More than 16,000 students were screened in a single day, underscoring the importance of early detection and timely eye care among children. The launch of the Pinhole Pupilloplasty Centre at Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, Alwarpet, by the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Thiru. C. Joseph Vijay, therefore marks more than the opening of a specialised clinical facility. It represents a step towards a future in which advanced optics, microsurgery, tissue preservation and precision patient selection work together to help more people see.
