Copper Industry in India
A. Mining :
1. Hindustan Copper Ltd. - The only Copper Miner in India.
HCL’s copper concentrate is majorly consumed by domestic primary copper producers
B. Custom Smelters :
1. Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Birla Copper)Dahej,Gujarat – Capacity - 5 lakh tpa Refined Copper
2. Vedanta Limited (Sterlite Copper) Silvasa, Daman and Diu – Capacity – 2.16 lakh tpa
3. Adani Group (Kutch Copper Ltd.),Mundra,Gujarat – Phase-I plant with a capacity of 5 lakh tpa has been installed.
These companies majorly import raw material i.e. Copper Concentrate to produce refined copper and strategically located at
ports in order to take advantage of transportation cost associated with import of raw material / export of finished product and
extraction of by-products.
C. Up coming Smelters :
JSW has announced smelter refinery plant capacity of 5 lakh tpa in Odisha.
Hindalco is also expanding its capacity by installing secondary smelter / refinery facility at Dahej.
Adani Phase-II smelter of 5 lakh tpa capacity at Mundra.

and India’s Copper Ore Reserves is 164 milliontonnes .

• Rajasthan leads with 52.25% of India's Copper Ore, followed by Madhya
Pradesh (23.28%) and Jharkhand (15.14%).
• HCL has 156.97 million tonnes of Copper Ore Reserves with an average
grade of 1.31%.
• HCL has Reserves & Resources of 767.37 million tonnes at an average
grade of 0.94% (UNFC system).
