India becomes the First Country to establish Anti-Drone
Patrolling of Border and Urban areas
Indrajaal Ranger™ secures ₹155 Crore orders from Home Ministry, taking
Counter-Drone Security Beyond Military Installations, to Border Villages, VVIP
Routes and City Streets
Hyderabad, 17th August
Indrajaal Ranger™ introduces a new category of homeland-security vehicle: a purpose-built
Anti-Drone Patrol Vehicle capable of detecting, tracking, identifying and countering rogue
drones while moving at high speeds.
Police cars have patrolled city streets for more than a century. Now India is adding a new kind of patrol
vehicle -one that patrols the sky.
While the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Singapore have deployed
sophisticated counter-drone capabilities for military installations, their urban-security deployments are
often provided episodically by private security and technology operators. India is now taking the lead
in operationalising counter-drone patrolling at government scale, deploying purpose-built Anti-
Drone Patrol Vehicles as an enduring homeland-security capability across border security and
urban policing.
Indrajaal Autonomous Defense Systems and Sigma Advanced Systems today announced
approximately ₹155 crore in orders for Indrajaal Ranger from government of India. A ₹145 crore order,
awarded to the Indrajaal-Sigma consortium, brings the capability to India’s border-security environment.
A separate approximately ₹10 crore Urban Police order introduces Ranger for VVIP protection and
urban security.
Together, the deployments represent something larger than two Counter-UAS procurements. They
signal the emergence of an entirely new category of homeland-security infrastructure: The Anti-Drone
Patrol Vehicle.
A New Layer of Indian Homeland Security
Just as patrol vehicles transformed policing on the ground and safety of citizens, the emergence of
drones is creating the need for continuous patrol of low-altitude airspace. The Border deployments
strengthen protection against cross-border threats such as narcotics, weapons and surveillance drones,
while the Police deployments demonstrate the Ranger's value in VVIP security, public events, airports
and critical infrastructure. Together, they signal the emergence of Anti-Drone Patrol Vehicles as a
new operational layer in homeland security.
India’s First Purpose-Built Anti-Drone Patrol Vehicle
The Indrajaal Ranger™ is India’s only ARDTC-approved Anti-Drone Patrol Vehicle, conceived and
developed as a mobile Counter-UAS platform capable of delivering full mission capability while
travelling at high speeds. Unlike conventional fixed-site systems, Ranger enables security agencies to
carry protected airspace wherever the mission demands—along borders, VVIP routes, public events or
critical infrastructure.
Traditional Counter-UAS deployments have largely centred around protecting fixed military or strategic
installations. But homeland-security threats are inherently mobile.
A drone carrying narcotics can cross a border at a different location every night. A VVIP convoy moves
through a city. A major public gathering lasts only a few hours. Critical infrastructure may stretch across
hundreds of kilometres.
The counter-drone capability therefore needs to move with the mission.
Powered by SkyOS™, Ranger integrates advanced sensors, artificial intelligence, sensor fusion,
command and control, and layered countermeasures into a single autonomous platform built around
three complementary protection layers:
● Retractor – Take Control: Safely takes over rogue drones for controlled recovery and forensic
analysis.
● Lakshman Rekha – Keep Out: Creates a virtual protective boundary that prevents
unauthorised drones from entering secured airspace.
● Net Interceptor – Take Down: Physically intercepts and captures hostile drones when
electronic measures are insufficient.
The Ranger has been operationally validated through Government evaluations and selected by the
Ministry of Home Affairs, Ranger delivers an indigenous, field-proven capability for protecting India’s
most sensitive security environments.
Kiran Raju Penumacha, Founder & CEO, Indrajaal Autonomous Defense Systems, said, "Ukraine
demonstrated what drones can do in war. What we are now witnessing globally is that the drone threat
extends well beyond the battlefield. Borders, airports, cities, public events, critical infrastructure and
VVIP movements all require continuous protection of low-altitude airspace. Counter-UAS must
therefore become part of a nation's everyday security infrastructure. The Indrajaal Ranger™ was
designed around this reality, enabling security forces to take autonomous counter-drone capability
wherever the threat moves."
Sunil Kalidindi, CEO, Sigma Advanced Systems, said, "This programme showcases the strength of
India's defence manufacturing ecosystem, where advanced indigenous technologies can be developed,
manufactured and delivered at operational scale. This milestone demonstrates Sigma’s capabilities and
underscores our strategic partnership with Indrajaal in strengthening India's border and urban security
with a critical next-generation capability."
Globally : Counter-UAS Becomes a Homeland Security Imperative
These orders reflect a broader global shift. Counter-drone capability is no longer confined to wartime or
military installations, it is becoming an everyday homeland security requirement.
Recent events underscore this transition. During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the United States
conducted its largest-ever counter-drone operation, while Germany recently strengthened drone
defence measures following a serious security incident involving an explosive-laden drone near an
airport. As rogue drones increasingly threaten borders, airports, cities, critical infrastructure, public
gatherings and protected persons, governments worldwide are integrating Counter-UAS capabilities
into routine security operations. India’s induction of the Indrajaal Ranger™ is part of this global
evolution.
The drone threat does not begin when a war starts, and it does not end when a war stops.
Atmanirbhar Bharat : Indian Technology at operational scale
The programmes also reinforce the Government of India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, demonstrating
the capability of India’s private defence ecosystem to develop, manufacture and operationalise
advanced national-security technologies.
The model demonstrates how Indian technology innovation and Indian defence manufacturing can
come together to address one of the fastest-evolving security challenges facing nations worldwide.
