PRESS RELEASE
TCPL Announces Strategic Foray into Lithium-Ion
Battery Separator Film
• Strategic entry into the Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery materials
supply chain
• Leverages TCPL’s existing capabilities in specialised films, polymer
processing, precision manufacturing, R&D, process control and stringent
quality assurance
• Proposed investment of approximately Rs. 125 crore to be deployed over the
next 18 months
• Embeds the TCPL Group in the lithium-ion battery value chain powering
electric vehicles and energy storage systems
Mumbai, August 11, 2026: TCPL Packaging Limited (TCPL), one of India’s leading producers of
sustainable packaging solutions, today announced its strategic entry into the battery materials
business through a subsidiary the proposed to be incorporated for the manufacture of lithium-ion
battery separator films. The venture will enable the TCPL Group to participate in the Advanced
Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery supply chain and position the TCPL Group within India's rapidly
expanding new-energy materials ecosystem supporting the growing demand for lithium-ion
batteries used in electric vehicles, grid-scale energy storage and other applications.
The proposed business builds on TCPL’s established capabilities in specialised films, polymer
processing, precision manufacturing, R&D, process control and stringent quality assurance. While
battery separator films cater to a distinct end-use application, their manufacture involves material
science and process capabilities that are complementary to TCPL’s existing operations. These
synergies provide the TCPL Group with a strong foundation to develop and scale the new
business.
Over the past three decades, TCPL has delivered a revenue CAGR of approximately 17%, led by
its focused approach to value creation, innovation and timely diversification. The proposed entry
into battery separator films is a continuation of this disciplined growth strategy, aimed at
addressing emerging opportunities in India's domestic and export markets.
The project will be undertaken through a subsidiary to be incorporated for this purpose. TCPL
plans to invest approximately Rs.125 crore over the next 18 months, with commercial production
targeted for Q4 FY2028. The investment will be funded through a mix of internal accruals and
debt.
Commenting on the development, Mr. Saket Kanoria, Chairman & Managing Director, TCPL
Packaging Limited said: “We are pleased to announce the TCPL Group’s entry into the battery
materials business through the proposed manufacture of lithium-ion battery separator films. This
is a high-potential, technology-driven segment that fits naturally with our track record of identifying
and scaling new opportunities ahead of the curve.
We intend to develop this business in a phased manner, with a focus on developing the requisite
technology and manufacturing capabilities and building strong customer relationships. We believe
it has the potential to develop into a meaningful long-term growth platform for the TCPL Group.”
The lithium-ion battery separator film is a specialised material and a critical component of the
lithium-ion cell. It is positioned between the cathode and anode and plays a key role in the safety,
performance and reliability of the battery. The TCPL Group will develop the requisite technology
and manufacturing processes to establish a platform calibrated to the quality, consistency and
performance benchmarks demanded by lithium-ion cell manufacturers.
The proposed facility will have an initial capacity of 70 million square metres per annum,
equivalent to supporting 6-8 GWh of lithium-ion battery cell production annually. Over a phased
expansion horizon of 5-7 years, the TCPL Group envisages scaling this business to an annual
production capacity in the range of approximately 500 million square metres of separator film,
sufficient to support approximately 50 GWh of annual lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing
capacity in India. The Company will calibrate the pace and scale of this expansion based on
customer demand, technology readiness, and market developments.
India's overall battery storage demand is estimated to grow substantially over the long term, with
industry estimates projecting total demand across key end-use segments to reach 200 GWh+ by
2032, 500 GWh+ by 2037 and approximately 1,000 GWh per annum by the mid-2040s. This
growth is expected to be driven by rising adoption of electric vehicles, grid-scale energy storage,
consumer electronics and other applications. This is expected to be accompanied by a
corresponding rise in domestic requirement for battery components, including separator film, as
India works to build indigenous capacity across the battery value chain and reduce import
dependence.
The TCPL Group will implement the project over the next 18 months, with the initial focus on
establishing the manufacturing infrastructure, developing and validating the product, completing
customer qualification processes and building relationships with cell manufacturers. All necessary
arrangements and cooperation required to operationalise and scale the new business will be
entered into from time to time. The TCPL Group will evaluate further investments and capacity
additions based on customer demand, market developments and the successful ramp-up and
stabilisation of the initial phase.
