Sub: Company’s Samardung Tunnel project – incident update
We regret to inform you that:
- An incident occurred at the Samardung Tunnel project in North Sikkim following a gas
leak in the tunnel at around 1:00 PM on 20th July 2026 in Adit-3 - Face 4B Tunnel of the
Project, trapping 25 project personnel with certain casualties.
- The incident involved sudden release of suspected methane gas embedded / trapped
in the rocks resulted in a gas burst/explosion inside the tunnel, generating dense fumes
and toxic gases.
- Our project team is working in close coordination with the district administration,
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local
authorities and other emergency agencies to support the ongoing rescue operations.
- Detailed investigation will be undertaken to ascertain the cause of the incident.
In this hour of grief, our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and we stand by
them firmly during this difficult time.
