Patel Engineering Limited reported a gas leak explosion at its Samardung Tunnel project in North Sikkim on July 20, 2026, which trapped 25 workers and resulted in casualties. The incident involved a sudden methane release causing a burst/explosion and toxic fumes inside the tunnel. The company is coordinating rescue efforts with the NDRF, SDRF, district administration and other agencies, and will investigate the cause. Patel Engineering expressed condolences to the bereaved families.
