NHPC Limited reported an unfortunate incident at the under-construction Head Race Tunnel of its 500 MW Teesta VI Hydroelectric Project in Sikkim on July 20, 2026, following a suspected methane gas burst that caused an explosion and toxic fumes. The incident trapped 25 personnel, with 10 casualties confirmed so far. Emergency response teams, including NDRF, SDRF, and DG Mines-Safety, are conducting rescue operations while NHPC's top management is on-site coordinating efforts. A detailed investigation will be undertaken to determine the cause, and the company pledged full support to rescue agencies and affected families.
