Birla Corporation September quarter revenue up 9%,
cement sales grow 7%
KOLKATA, 31 Oct.--Birla Corporation Limited’s September quarter consolidated
revenue rose 9% to Rs 2,441 crore from Rs 2,233 crore in the same period last year.
The quarter saw weak cement prices and disruption in construction activities in
core markets owing to excessive rainfall.
The Company’s cement sales, by volume, during the quarter grew 7% year-on-year
(yoy) to 4.54 million tons (mt), while realization rose 2% to Rs 4,925 per ton. It was,
however, marginally lower sequentially as cement prices weakened through July
and August in core markets.
For the full quarter, realization for the cement industry declined 3% in the east and
remained flat in central India. Modest improvements were witnessed in the west
and north.
Capacity utilization for the quarter was maintained at 85%—the same level as last
year—but profitability was impaired owing to unprecedented increase in input
costs, which couldn’t be offset due to subdued prices. Clinker cost rose 13% while
power and fuel cost rose 15% yoy as pet coke prices rose 64% over the same period
last year. The Cement Division’s EBITDA per ton for the quarter was at Rs 482 versus
Rs 712 in the same period last year.

To mitigate cost pressure, the Company scaled up consumption of green power to
32% for the quarter from 30% in the same period a year ago. Also, the Company
started extracting coal from its Bikram coal mine in Madhya Pradesh during the
September quarter. Production from the mine is being ramped up and it is
expected to deliver 180,000 tons of coal in the second-half of the current financial
year, and significantly reduce fuel cost.
Birla Corporation’s consolidated EBITDA for the quarter was at Rs 254 crore,
compared to Rs 332 crore in the same period a year ago. Consolidated net profit for
the quarter was at Rs 37 crore against Rs 90 crore a year earlier. The Cement
Division’s EBITDA margin fell 490 basis points, from a year earlier, to 9.8%.
In line with its stated strategy, Birla Corporation Limited continued to expand sales
of blended cement, which accounted for 86% of total cement sales during the
quarter. Sales by volume of blended cement grew 4% yoy with significant gains
coming from Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan. Sales from the
newly commissioned production facilities at Kundanganj and Mukutban rose 20%
and 8%, respectively.
Similarly, sales of premium products registered healthy growth of 17% during the
quarter. Sales by volume stood at 2.38 mt compared to 2.02 mt in the same period
a year earlier. Sales of Perfect Plus, the flagship brand, continued to strengthen with
21% yoy growth during the quarter. Premium cement accounted for 64% of the
Company’s sales through the trade channel compared to 61% in the same period a
year earlier.
Given its sustained high capacity utilization, Birla Corporation Limited remains
focused on sales through the more remunerative trade channel. The Company’s
sales through the trade channel during the September quarter was at 82% versus
79% in the same period last year.

Jute: The Jute Division overcame acute shortage of raw jute to report a cash profit
for the quarter of Rs 13.01 crore compared to Rs 4.64 crore in the same period a year
earlier. Faced with supply constraints, Birla Jute was forced to rationalize
production by reducing working days. As a result, production during the quarter
declined 26% by volume yoy.
However, thanks to better price realization, Birla Jute registered a 17% growth in
revenue during the quarter. With 143% jump in export sales and 64% growth in
sales of shopping bags, the Jute Division’s revenue for the quarter rose to Rs 155
crore versus Rs 132 crore in the same period a year earlier. As result, Birla Jute’s
operating profit for the quarter was at Rs 6.16 crore against Rs 4.02 crore in the same
period a year earlier.
Outlook: Realization from cement sales has started to improve from October as
construction activities regain momentum. Government spending on infrastructure
is expected to be the key growth driver. Construction activities in the private sector,
too, is gradually improving. But cost pressure will persist and may continue to
impact overall profitability.
