PRESS RELEASE
Infosys Foundation Collaborates with Madras Medical College to Strengthen
Cardio-Obstetric Care for Pregnant Women
Sets up a cardio-obstetric outpatient unit and state-of-the-art catheterization laboratory
at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, in Chennai
Bengaluru, India – September 9, 2026: Infosys Foundation, the philanthropic and CSR arm of Infosys,
today announced the inauguration of an exclusive cardio-obstetric outpatient unit and a state-of-the-art
cardio obstetric catheterization laboratory at the Institute of Cardiology at the Rajiv Gandhi Government
General Hospital (RGGGH), in Chennai, which is run by the Madras Medical College (MMC). These two
units will help strengthen the cardio-obstetric care at RGGGH and help alleviate maternal mortality caused
by heart-related diseases.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by Dr. K. G. Arunraj, Hon'ble Minister for Health, Medical
Education and Family Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu; Dr. Darez Ahamed, IAS, Secretary to
Government, Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Tamil Nadu; Dr. K.
Shantharaman, Dean, Madras Medical College (MMC) and Rajiv Gandhi Government General
Hospital (RGGGH), Chennai; and Mr. Anil Kumar P. N., Senior Vice President and Center Head,
Chennai, Infosys, along with senior officials and executives from MMC and RGGGH.
This initiative is part of a broader collaboration between Infosys Foundation and MMC, which runs multiple
healthcare facilities in Chennai, including the Institute of Social Obstetrics and the Government Kasturba
Gandhi Hospital for Women and Children. In August 2024, Infosys Foundation inaugurated a special facility
at the Institute of Social Obstetrics that is equipped with a high-risk antenatal ward and other critical care
facilities to address cardiac complications among pregnant women.
Infosys Foundation has given a grant of over INR 31 crore to help strengthen MMC’s cardio-obstetric care
facilities across its hospitals. In addition, the grant will also contribute towards managing patients under
MMC’s internationally acclaimed research program – the National Pregnancy and Cardiac Diseases
(NPAC) study, the largest global single-center study on pregnancy-related heart disease, and the Tamil
Nadu Pregnancy and Heart Disease Registry (TNPHDR), which is the largest registry in this world in this
domain. The main objective of this study is to develop a care protocol for heart disease in pregnancy and
evaluate its effectiveness in improving pregnancy outcomes.
Sunil Kumar Dhareshwar, Trustee, Infosys Foundation, said, “Infosys Foundation is committed to
addressing healthcare challenges and enabling initiatives towards the care and support for women’s health.
With the inauguration of these units at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, we aim to enhance
maternal care by addressing the rising concern of cardiac complications during pregnancy. Our support not
only aims to reduce maternal mortality but also contributes to research that will drive better healthcare
solutions for women across the country.”
Dr.K. Shantaraman, Director and Dean of Madras Medical College (MMC), said, “We thank Infosys
Foundation for their steadfast support in helping us scale the cardio-obstetric care for pregnant women
across our facilities. The new units at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, will further establish
MMC as a national and international leader in maternal healthcare and research, offering innovative care
models to address emerging healthcare challenges.”
