Press Release
Kirloskar Oil Engines and DEUTZ Enter Strategic Co-operation on the
1.6-Litre Engine Platform
Strategic partnership: Kirloskar Oil Engines combines its engineering capabilities and
manufacturing scale with DEUTZ’s international sales and service network.
Market position: The partnership leverages KOEL’s standing as one of the world’s leading
industrial engines and genset manufacturers.
Emissions compliance: The 1.6-litre platform complies with EU Stage V and US EPA/CARB
Tier 4 standards for off-highway applications.
Power output: The engine series delivers 18 to 41.2 kW for construction, material
handling, and industrial machinery.
Pune / Cologne, September 2, 2026 – Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited (KOEL) and DEUTZ have agreed
on a strategic co-operation. Through this co-operation, KOEL is expanding the global reach of its
compact engine solutions into markets across Europe and North America, complementing
international drive portfolios in the under-2-litre power segment. Kirloskar Oil Engines is a trusted
industrial leader specialising in the engineering and manufacturing of internal combustion engines
for the off-highway sector, while DEUTZ is a leading global engine manufacturer and drive system
specialist based in Cologne, Germany.
“DEUTZ and Kirloskar Oil Engines have a long-standing history of industrial collaboration in the
field of engines and drive solutions. We are delighted to build on this established partnership with
this agreement and to expand our collaboration on compact drive solutions across applications
globally.” said Anmol Batra, President Global Industrial Business at Kirloskar Oil Engines.
“Combining KOEL’s engineering heritage and manufacturing scale with DEUTZ’s established
international network enables us to address market trends such as downsizing and meeting
growing global demand for reliable, compact power solutions.”
The new drive platform will be offered as the naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions of
the R550 platform. The water-cooled three-cylinder series with electronic direct injection and a
high-pressure common-rail system covers a power range from 18 to 41.2 kW. Efficient
combustion, compact dimensions, and flexible integration enable use in a variety of machine
concepts, including construction, material handling, and industrial applications. The robust engine
platform also meets the stringent emissions requirements of EU Stage V as well as EPA and CARB
Tier 4.
Markus Villinger, CEO Business Unit DEUTZ Engines noted, “With the 1.6-litre engine, we are
adding a compact and high-performance solution to our portfolio in the lower power segment.
Together with Kirloskar Oil Engines, we are responding to market demand for reliable solutions
below 2 litres. Combined with our global service offering, customers will benefit from reliable
spare-parts supply, technical support, and lifecycle services.”
The collaboration brings together Kirloskar Oil Engines’ core engineering legacy and
manufacturing experience across the powergen, industrial, agriculture, and infrastructure sectors
with DEUTZ’s established global network and drive system expertise.
